Have you ever made something with the intention of destroying it at the end? It’s fun. And working big is fun too since it’s a full body thing. I still have some huge paper left, I need to think of more huge paper projects.

& a question without answer

I always hate that moment when you come to the table and you have to quickly struggle with this question. Hopefully nobody noticed.

stage fright

One of the Personal Projects I’ve been wanting to do is photos of various Baltimore neighborhoods. I haven’t gotten around to it yet, but I did take a couple snaps of my neighborhood.

I swear every time I walk down my street I notice some new random detail. I don’t think I noticed these guys for like the whole first year I lived on this street (which says more about my powers of observation than anything else).

The sun wasn’t the best – half the street was too dark and the other was too sunny but I wanted to get out there. The funny part is how nervous I felt about it! Like people would interrogate me about why I was taking photos. Especially since I take pictures of dumb things – I just think the styles of the building around here is really interesting and possibly random.

My cover story – if it came up – was that I was doing a photo project for school, since there is an art school nearby. I passed another dude who also had a camera hanging from his neck. He was more convincing as a hipster/art student though, he probably really was working on a photo project.

It’s a shame how uncomfortable I felt just having my camera on me! I used to carry one around all the time and had no problem snapping away. I think part of it is just getting used to it again – the theory behind this spiffy camera was that I would get back into it photography; I used to really enjoy it. I feel kind of sad that I seem to have lost something that I enjoyed so much. Although the photos aren’t the best this was a pretty productive outing – by the end I was already getting over my unsubstantiated paranoia. I guess I just need to keep at it. :P

As a student, Shioyasu was fascinated by the veins in the leaves of Rumex japonicus found all over campus. The veins were so delicate, yet had such dynamic forms, and she once tried cutting them out one by one with a utility knife. She describes this as the inspiration behind her current works, created on the theme of “nature,” and falling into three categories: cutting works, which she creates with fine, overlapping cuts in large, wide sheets of paper using utility knives, soldering-iron works, in which she creates images by melting holes in special synthetic paper, and drawings, using acrylics or charcoal. Common to each of these approaches is a significant amount of delicate and repetitive work performed by hand.

regular thursday

I went to the facebook page but it didn’t explain what this was; I thought it was for a band or something IDK

Since I’m a day late I thought about “Wordless Thursday” but then I put words on it (although I have a habit of doing that anyway) so I guess it’s just Thursday.

I may be a little quiet for a while because I am quitting my cushy insurance job at the end of the month to pursue a lucrative and stable “career” as a bellydance and/or zumba instructor. I am going to take over my teacher’s BD classes (although it hasn’t been confirmed with the gym yet) by the end of the summer, but obvs I need to start pursuing other locations to make sure I have enough going on to make this possible. The ultimate goal is to open my own dance studio but it’s easier to start by working through other facilities, so I’ll do that for a bit first.

So, come April 29, posting will NOT pick up in a big way because I will have SO MANY prospects that it will be hard to even make it to my computer. (that’s me thinking positive). Although I have also toyed with the idea of little online AJ workshops of my own; all the cool kids are doing it. :)
