sacred hands

I don’t know what my deal is you guys, but I’m really into hamsas (also Hand of Fatima) and healing/spiral hands lately. The Hamsa is a talisman against the Evil Eye and is also generally for luck etc; I saw the spiral hand motif a lot in Arizona and it appears in Native American art as a healing symbol (I couldn’t find very many on flickr, however).

I even made a journal with the motif:

I’m sure this is extremely meaningful symbolism somehow. ;) Also, I think am going to return to the journal. I will probably continue to use flat pages if I have a specific composition layout in mind or something. I don’t feel like there is any sort of continuity between unbound pages. Having them in a book kind of forces them to have a relationship with each other even if the subjects or styles are unrelated and I feel like it more appropriately documents that particular “chunk” of my life. So for me, journaling requires a journal. I had considered binding up the completed flat pages, but I dunno, I feel like that’s forcing them together somehow; they need to start and end together or it doesn’t work. Am I overthinking it?? haha

(about 5 minutes from now I will be complaining about the constraints of a book and return to flat pages…some people are never happy! ;) )

plastic bag journal

I had this idea on the fly today, so the video is a little (or a lot) haphazard. Here’s a really good tutorial on recycling plastic bags. I’m also mostly kidding about the recycled stuff looking like junk – I think this could be really cute if I had actually spent time on it. :)

Anyway, to answer your question, the table is kind of short but mostly I’m really tall.

Yay! I am finishing up one more (green). The red, blue and yellow are heavy (140lb) watercolor paper which is what I use for journaling (it’ll take pretty much anything, including tons of water and beeswax) and the interoffice (and upcoming green) are 70lb which is good for most dry media but will take limited amounts of water. I’m trying to decide if going all the way to 140 is worth it — based on this, my personal preference is for the really heavy stuff (although 70 is fine).

I love the used-ness of the interoffice envelope, but I didn’t think it would be a good idea to have peoples’ full names on there so I had to scratch them out. Not ideal but it looks OK I guess. Most importantly, the envelope is still open-able and the book can be closed by looping that red string around the little … thingie… (technical term); you know, like the original envelope. It’s nerdy but I love it!

I need to figure out a new configuration to take photos because they are coming out too dark or yellow. I’ve adjusted this one in paintshop but it looks blah to me. Apparently finding a free box is impossible, so I may have to just go out and buy a box to make a little light box. Or maybe I could just buy one of those little table-top light boxes. But cardboard boxes are way cheaper, which is usually how I make my decisions. :)

red & blue blanks

red&blue

I’m still not a huge fan of binding blank journals, but I’m getting the hang of it! I really like how the red cover turned out – I tried to replicate it on the blue but it’s never the same. ;)

The crazy pills finally wore off and I finished this. I don’t know why I was having such a hard time with it. I wanted to put on a ribbon closure but I couldn’t find my eyelets. :( (Yes, I did actually look for them)
